Netherlands thrash Italy in Euro 2008

The Netherlands thrashed Italy 3-0 in their European Championship opener on Monday. Ruud van Nistelrooy and Wesley Sneijder scored in the first half while defender Giovanni van Bronckhorst added the third in the 79th minute. This was Italy’s most lopsided loss in the history of the tournament. Elsewhere in the competition France were held to a goalless draw by Romania in their opening encounter. The draw means France will face an uphill task to qualify from Group C which also includes the Netherlands and World Champions Italy.
